I bought a 2010 Stumpjumper Expert Carbon 29er. I've been a bit leery because of the impact concern about the strength of the material composition, and because many of the misconceptions circulating about the durability of it. I asked the head mechanic my LBS (with 15 years exp.) and told me not to worry about taking easy on the bike – I have only to be wary of the impacts – within striking rocks and such. My concern is: Does the cycling normally (eg short-altitude jumps, drops, etc) to be good for the frame? I am a very light pilot somewhere between 132-138 pounds, depending on gear. I've been trying to bike as it would any other: small jumps of cornices, moderate shaking of the boulders (no shock to the structure, obviously). Constantly check my calendar for any signs of fatigue, but even after a shaky few events, check to be fine. I can be a little too OCD. ja, ja.
You can be a little more than a little OCD, for buying the carbon bike, for starters. The same problem I had. Obsessed with the latest older. I do not worry because mine is a road bike the hardest impact is seen occasional bump in the road or on vacation I miss a speed bump. I obsess with the maintenance of all my bikes. Relax a little. The frame has a lifetime warranty so they are protected financially. Your mechanic will see all the time and told him do not worry. You are quite light in weight, so do not worry about the weight stress cracking. Now, to give him something to worry about and obsess ….. Hmmmm. I have it! All that sand crappy sandy soil and the entry of all sealed bearings and pollution of each chain rollers. Not to mention all moving parts as your derailleurs. Wow now you have a lot to obsess about.
